Amah Mutsun Tribal Language Class

Language Program

Ohlone Language MapIn 2011, the American Indian Resource Center entered into a partnership with the Amah Mutsun tribe to establish an online learning program on the Mutsun language. With the expertise of the Native American Language Institute at UC Davis Director James Sarmento (Miwok) and Lajos Szoboszlai (both linguists pursuing their PhDs at UC Davis), the tribe is bringing back the language. Using oral sources as well as Dr. Marc Okrand's 1977 dissertation (UC Berkeley) on Mutsun language entitled Mutsun Grammar and J.P Harrington's field notes on his interviews with Mutsun matriarch Ascencion Cervantes y Solorsano, the online course is produced by UC Santa Cruz' Office of Diversity and Inclusion and the American Indian Resource Center with the Amah Mutsun tribe.
